We toast to it, are reminded to be grateful for it when life is tough and things go wrong, and take it for granted until it’s no longer ours to enjoy. It underpins our potential at work, our fun at play and our happiness at home; it has a big say in our quality of life. This report is all about good health. It’s about the risks we present to it in the way we choose to live our lives: what and how much we eat and drink and the amount of physical activity we do. But more importantly, it’s about the good health that’s possible if business and Government share responsibility for helping people make better, healthier choices more of the time.
People and a sense of possibility lie at the heart of what follows. There’s an intrinsic belief that consistency of approach and clarity of message can embed good health and the aspiration to achieve it deep in society, propelling sustainable and meaningful changes in how people choose to live their lives. We can, working together, raise awareness and carve out opportunities for individuals, families and communities to kick the unhealthy habits of a lifetime. There is no silver bullet and change will not come overnight; people are complex and their behaviours entrenched, but there is a way forward – through genuine partnership and shared responsibility. After all, we’re all in this together.
